More Details About Yesterday

Yesterday was a rough day. As we were waiting for Jaisal to be called down for surgery, my dad called me from NMH and told me the transplant was canceled. Jaisal's surgeons explained to me that Kirk has an extra artery going to the segments of his liver that he would need to donate to Jaisal. The artery has a fair amount of blood flowing through it, and they were afraid of the risks it would create for both Jaisal and Kirk if they tried to deal with this added complication. They also found a bit more fat on the left lobe of Kirk's liver than the section they'd biopsied on his right, which cemented the surgeons decision that the transplant was not a good idea.

This outcome was completely shocking not only to me, but to Jaisal's surgeon as well. He could not understand how the MR had not detected this artery. He also said that only once before have they gotten to the point of opening someone up and not being able to proceed. Ugghh! As I said yesterday, the black cloud of medical mayhem continues to hang over our family. Nothing seems to go relatively easily for us; ever.

Jaisal is home now being his normal cute fun self. My parents are being awesome and staying with him so I can shift my hospital overnighting expertise to Kirk and stay with him at NMH. Kirk is in a fair amount of pain, but doing well overall. We expect he will be discharged today, but need to take it easy for at least another week or so. He's definitely unhappy with the outcome, but we're both glad that no one will let Jaisal get anything less than a perfect liver.
