This $%*@ Just Got Real

We got the call yesterday that Jaisal's transplant is set for October 21 - THIS FRIDAY!

Clearly we're excited. We know that Jaisal needs a new liver and the sooner he gets it the better. At the same time, I am panicked! Almost exactly a year ago we found out that Jaisal had biliary atresia and dealt with surgery on our two month old. It was so hard to see him with all those tubes and to watch his heart rate go up and just wait to be able to administer pain medications again to calm him down. Even after he was off the continuous morphine drip, I remember him being so uncomfortable that Kirk and I would take turns all night holding him in our lap so that he could get some little bits of sleep.

The worst was the hunger crying. We couldn't let him eat for almost 3 days after surgery, and we just had to deal with it until he exhausted himself from crying. All of those memories are still too real, so knowing that this surgery will be bigger, he'll have more tubes, be in more pain, and probably not get to eat for even longer makes me very nervous. And on top of all that Kirk will be downtown in another hospital recovering from his own surgery.

Yup, the excitement is definitely a bit tainted, but I am trying to focus on what a new liver can mean for Jaisal and how it can improve his quality of life. My single goal for the next year is fewer hospital admissions. In the last 12 months, we've had 9 inpatient stays. Anything less than that for the next year will be truly life changing.

Please keep Jaisal and Kirk in your thoughts and prayers this Friday. I know they'll feel the love and hopefully it will lead to smooth surgeries for both.
